New Zealand Rendering Plant Commissioned New Zealand meat processor and exporter Alliance Group has completed commissioning the second stage of its new $25 million rendering plant at Lorneville near Invercargill, New Zealand. The plant ’s daily production includes about 50 metric tons of high quality meat meal for food manufacturers and animal feeds and around 80 metric tons of tallow for use in a range of applications from cosmetics to biofuels. The products are exported to international markets such as China, North America, Europe, and Asia. The new plant incorporates the latest technology, including a press dewatering system that uses less energy and produces high quality products. The process is virtually “zero waste,” resulting in high product yields and low wastewater output. The plant is expected to save the co-operative 9,000 metric tons of lignite and more than 1.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity each year, enough to power 170 homes. The plant, which processes raw material from Alliance’s Lorneville, Mataura, and Makarewa processing plants in New Zealand, also uses innovative Rendertech technology providing continuous throughput, further reducing energy and handling requirements. Almost 2,000 people are employed at Lorneville, which is New Zealand’s largest sheep meat processing plant. Alliance Group is a co-operative owned by 5,000 farmer shareholders and is the world’s largest processor and exporter of sheep meat. 34  June 2014  Render www.rendermagazine.com
