Pilgrim’s Closes Rendering Plant, Sells Chicken Facility In early September, Pilgrim’s Pride Corp., majority owned by JBS USA, closed its rendering facility in El Dorado, AR, that produced chicken meal used in pet food, eliminaƟng 29 jobs. The rendering plant operaƟons were shiŌed to another Pilgrim’s facility in Texas. In addiƟon, Pilgrim’s Pride plans to sell its chicken plant in Batesville, AR, to Ozark Mountain Poultry, a niche producer, in October. There are 400 employees at the plant, although it was unclear how many employees Ozark would retain. Both acƟons are said to be part of an ongoing re-alignment of the company’s producƟon faciliƟes announced 18 months ago. Separators Makes Staffing Changes   Separators, Inc. has promoted Bill OƩer to vice president of sales and markeƟng. He has over 30 years of sales experience with process-related equipment and services and has been with the company the past seven years as Midwest regional sales manager.   Bill Statham has joined Separators as vice president of operaƟons. In his new role, he will oversee the company’s centrifuge remanufacturing, service, and parts offerings. The executive commiƩees of both associaƟons voted in mid-September in favor of pursuing talks to create a new organization to represent the meat and poultry industry. A commiƩee composed of members from each associaƟon will be formed to decide the next steps and explore over the next several months how a new organizaƟon can best serve its members. Meeker on Animal Health Committee Dr. David Meeker, senior vice president of ScienƟfic Services, NaƟonal Renderers AssociaƟon, was one of 20 individuals recently appointed to serve on the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary’s Advisory CommiƩee on Animal Health through August 2014. He has served on the commiƩee previously. The commiƩee provides public and industry perspecƟves on USDA strategies, policies, and programs to prevent, control, and/or eradicate animal health diseases. The commiƩee will also lead broader dialogue on public health concerns and the stability of the livestock economies. Others appointed are Dr. AnneƩe Jones, California state veterinarian and director of Animal Health and Food Safety Services; Dr. Donald Hoenig, former Maine state veterinarian; Dr. Boyd Parr, state veterinarian from South Carolina at Clemson University; R. ScoƩ Stuart, chief execuƟve officer of the NaƟonal Livestock Producers AssociaƟon; Dr. Elizabeth K. Wagstrom, chief veterinarian for the NaƟonal Pork Producers Council; Dr. Willie M.
